How does the armband work?
The SenseWear® armband is a multi-sensor measuring device worn on the triceps of the right upper arm. The armband continuously records a stream of physiological signals serving to quantify the physical activity, energy expenditure and sleep pattern of an individual in free living conditions for up to two weeks (1, 2).
Physiological signals from integrated sensors (skin temperature, near body temperature, heat flux, galvanic skin resistance and two accelerometers) are used, in combination with free-living activity recognition patterns, to calculate energy consumption based on proprietary algorithms of artificial intelligence. These algorithms have been trained by thousands of controlled experiments in which information from the sensors is compared to data collected with reference methods, enhanced by Data Mining. Validations of rest, sleep and activity related energy expenditure against doubly labeled water (3) and indirect calorimetry (4, 5) indicate a high degree of correlation and accuracy.

Which sensors are integrated into the armband and which parameters are measured?

How are results documented?
After transfer of the stored armband data via USB cable or the Wireless Communicator hub to the PC, results are displayed on the screen:
A drag and drop feature in the time window allows zooming to any time interval, with a one minute resolution. Displayed results reflect the chosen time. With a couple of clicks, resting energy expenditure or resting metabolic rate RMR, sleep, and total energy expenditure can be displayed. After setting an activity threshold, the active energy expenditure and the physical activity duration PAD is given. All these parameters seem to be indispensable in weight management, trainings and activity programs.
The report contains all numeric information and adds column graphs simplifying the analysis. At a single glance, the activity, sleep, and lifestyle pattern of the test individual can be viewed.
