EFG ElectroFluidGraph

  • Identification of malnutrition
  • Determination of body cell mass without knowledge of body weight
  • Determination of relative interstitial space volume
  • Optimization of nutrition therapy (e.g. in Decubitus prophylaxis)
  • Assessment of water and electrolyte status
  • Identification of sub-clinical edema, classification of anasarca
  • Identification of reduced hydration volume, classification of exsiccosis
  • Determination of Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) derived from body cell mass

Incorporating a PALM® PDA microcomputer, the BIA EFG represents the top of the line of the Akern medical bio-impedance instruments. Total portability, high resolution touch screen, and superior methodology for hydration and nutrition management are the key features of this device, based on the sound experience of Akern who is, together with its sister company RJL, the acclaimed world leader in medical BIA. Designed for point-of-care use, the BIA EFG determines water volume of the intra and extra cellular space clearly indicating dehydration (water deficit, loss of volume) and hyperhydration (excessive water and increased volume) as well as a pathologically augmented extra cellular space indicative of (sub-) clinical edema.

The integrated PALM® PDA processes measured data and can give valuable interpretations by » BIAGRAM® and » Biavector® according to Prof. A. Piccoli on site allowing an immediate diagnosis at the point-of-care. Whenever urgency calls for an instant evaluation for pending hydration or nutrition management the BIA EFG is the instrument of choice. Documented applications in critical care, cardiology or nephrology show the striking advantages of this approach.

For the assessment of nutrition or hydration status and the ensuing optimization of therapy follow up measurements for trend analysis are often more helpful than single tests. A powerful patient record management system plays an important role in effectively following changes, may it be within hours, months or even years. The internal data bank of the BIA EFG allows the efficient management of up to 50,000 patient records which can be transferred to the PC at any time by wireless communication.

The following parameters are determined:

  • Resistance (Rz) in Ohm

  • New: Capacitance (C)
  • Phase angle (PA) in degrees
  • Bio-active cell mass (BCM) in kilograms and
  • Total body water (TBW) in liters and percent
  • Extra cellular water  (ECW)in liters and percent
  • Intra cellular water (ICW) in liters and percent
  • Fat mass (FM) in Kilograms and percent
  • Fat free mass (FFM) in kilograms and percent
